This is a tutorial on how to make actual chainmail. I show you the types of wires to use,
how to set up a jig, roll out the rings and asssemble them together into chainmail. I also
give you advice on what tools work the best. The mail type we make is called 4 in 1.

Please note this correction: I say in the video that I use a 5/8 inch rod to make the links. Thats not right. I use a 3/8 inch rod. so, if you buy a steel rod get the 3/8 inch. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I also point this out in an annotation.

  2. Those rings are not 5/8in… maybe 5/16 or 3/8. besides.. .no way a 5/8in rod will fit in a drill that size… those come with a 3/8 in. chuck…

  3. Would not excatly call it real chainmail. Or maille as we should probably call it. Riviting every ring is even more time consuming. Butted maille, as this is, would have been extremely rare back then. It simply don't protect very well. But I'm sure there's a few examples.

Sure it's fine for costumes, larp and what not. But real maille. Not really.

    Great instruction though 🙏

  4. Thank you so much for making this video, I have seen chain mail armor in a game called "Minecraft", and I thought that I might start making chain mail in the future, this video was really helpful.

  5. Will this protect me from knife stab even though this is not riveted?.. i love your video, by the way..

  6. I was looking for something to do and I came across this video. It was vary informative. Though I found out I have to link two side by side before I can go downward.

  7. That is very time consuming that would take hours days possibly months, a whole new appreciation.

  8. I work in security and I need some real anti stab chainmail. Do you think this steel can hold up a stab?

  9. Yucky weak butted chainmail. You can actually rip it apart with your hands, unlike riveted chainmail… however this is still a cool DIY project.

  10. I'm using wire for mine too, it's copper painted silver so it gets messed up if I'm not careful. I'm trying to get an idea of what pattern I want to use, I'm making this as a fashion piece. finding the right gauge was difficult but for now I've settled on 16 gauge, and I don't exactly have the proper tools so it's been slow going. I've got wire cutters, a wooden dowel from Lowe's, and small rolls of wire from Amazon so you could definitely say I'm a little in over my head. I was going to use a drill to turn the wire for me but I lost my drill so I'm doing it by hand.

  11. This ain’t technically “real” chainmail as real chainmail was riveted not bitter but it’s an ok costume maille

  12. Been interested in making mail for decades and trying it for the first time. I made a jig and originally got a 5/8 dowel but it looked too big so switched it for 3/8. Using 14 ga. gal. steel, do you still think it's better to go with a 5/8 i.d. vs. a 3/8 i.d.?

  13. Thumbs upped. Very interesting and informative. My brother is looking to make chainmail outfits, so this is perfect. Thank you.

  14. I've seen so many variations on "lol this is knitting for men". Why? Is knitting gendered? Is yarn too feminine for anyone with a penis to handle?

  15. I don’t know if I’ll do it but you explained it so well. I just can’t do it now because I can’t find a ladybug 🐞.

  16. NOTE: Do NOT go on a crusade with this type of chainmail. Butted mail can handle light hits, but will rip on heavy combat.

  17. I am just starting my chain-mail hauberk, I am a medieval re enactor thought I would have a go. This should be fun

  18. Hey epic fantasy I've started making some chain mail for an assessment based off of this tutorial but I think I've got something wrong because in my links every second 4 in 1 link gets twisted and reversed but the rest of the links are fine I was just wondering if there was a trick to untangling it
